A History of Empowerment
THE ORIGIN OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the idea of historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial in 1976.
“In celebrating Black History Month,” Ford said in his message, “we can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Many other countries around the world also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
Every year a theme for Black History Month is chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and this year's theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identify, and Diversity.
THE MACE® BRAND STORY OF EMPOWERMENT
Keeping you and your family safe is a driving force for us. Mace Brand began with the invention of a chemical compound in 1965, which later evolved into pepper spray in the 1980s. We’re best known for our flagship product - Mace Brand pepper spray.
Our history of innovation and empowerment continued with the creation of pepper gel in 2004, and over the years we’ve added personal alarms and stun devices to become the leader in non-lethal personal protection devices.
We pride ourselves on being the original and authentic Mace® Brand, and we have a history of seizing opportunities to help solve our customers’ problems. We’ve constantly improved and innovated our products to be more effective and easier to use. Mace's unique "Grip 'n Flip" technology ensures accuracy and safety every time, no mistakes.
You tell us. Has a Mace® Brand product helped empower you, your family, or someone you know? Leave a comment and let us know. We want others to hear their stories.
Eventually, it all circles back to our mission: Providing community and family safety through individual empowerment.
It’s smart for you to take steps to feel safer, more secure, and more empowered. Be ready for the future, and as we celebrate Black History month, take time to celebrate how far we’ve all come, and realize that the path to a better, safer, journey lies ahead. It’s a journey we’ll be on with you. We'll be listening to your feedback and developing new non-lethal personal protection devices that make sense for all of us. The power of Empowerment is what drives us to help you and your family thrive in our ever-changing world.
